The young illustrator Gemma Tate marries the divorced Charlie Bovery and thus involuntarily becomes the stepmother of his two children and the nightmare of his quarrelsome ex-wife. In this role, Gemma is soon fed up with London and persuades Charlie to move to Normandy with her. But the allure of French country life soon wears off and Gemma ekes out a dull existence in the middle of nowhere in Normandy.

For Gemma's new neighbor, the well-read baker Raymond Joubert, however, the idyllic country life takes on a whole new perspective when the Boverys acquire the old farmhouse nearby. He becomes obsessed with her and the idea that he is looking at the incarnation of Flaubert's heroine...

Based on Gustave Flaubert's masterpiece "Madame Bovary", Posy Simmonds has created a multi-layered panopticon about adultery and its consequences, betrayal and disappointment, dreams and life's lies. Told in a clever and psychologically dense way, "Gemma Bovery" is a multi-faceted comic in which Posy Simmonds succeeds in expressing the inner conflict of her characters thanks to her precise drawings.

Born in Bershire, England in 1945, Posy Simmonds studied art in Paris and then graphic design in London. In 1969, she received her first commission for a serialized strip in "The Sun" newspaper. Since the early 70s, she has regularly drawn for the English daily newspaper "The Guardian" and has twice been awarded Cartoonist of the Year for her work. She gained international recognition as the author and illustrator of "True Love", "Gemma Bovery" and "Tamara Drewe".
Like "Gemma Bovery", "Tamara Drewe" originally appeared in weekly episodes in "The Guardian" and was only later published in book form. She was made a Member of the British Empire in 2002 for her services to the newspaper industry. Posy Simmonds is known for her caricaturing style, with which she explores the British middle class. In her socially analytical stories, Posy Simmonds likes to portray typical representatives of the British literary scene.
In addition to comics and cartoons, Posy Simmonds has also been writing and drawing children's books since 1987. "Schokoladenhochzeit", "Die Katze des Bäckers", "Polly, Jack und der Büffel" and other titles have been published in German by Diogenes. "Tamara Drewe" was awarded the Prix de la critique at the International Comic Festival in Angoulême in January 2009. Stephen Frears adapted "Tamara Drewe" [Immer Drama um Tamara] into a film in 2010. The title role was played by Gemma Arterton, known from "Quantum of Solace", where she played alongside Daniel Craig.
